FAQ

Frequently asked questions.

Everything supervisors ask about setup, routines, privacy, and billing. Can't find your answer? Contact support.

Getting started

Do I need two apps?

Yes. Install StudyLumen Parent on the supervisor device and StudyLumen Child on the Android device you want to supervise.

Does the supervised user need an account?

No. The supervisor creates a supervised profile, and the Android device pairs with StudyLumen Parent using a QR code. The StudyLumen Child app does not need a separate user login.

Which devices does StudyLumen support?

StudyLumen Child runs on Android phones and tablets. StudyLumen Parent installs on the supervisor's own phone. The two pair by QR code.

Can I supervise more than one device per profile?

Each supervised profile supports one active device at a time. Pairing a new device automatically retires the previous one for that profile, and StudyLumen Parent warns you before that happens.

How long does setup take?

A few minutes. Install StudyLumen Parent, create a supervised profile, install StudyLumen Child on the Android device, and pair by QR code. StudyLumen Child then guides each required Android permission step by step.

How is StudyLumen different from Google Family Link?

Family Link is Google's free, account-based device management: it requires a Google Account for the supervised person and manages screen time, app installs, and location at the account level. StudyLumen is study-first: QR pairing with no supervised-user account, named routines with per-routine allowed apps, access requests answered from the block screen, and DNS-level website filtering across browsers. See studylumen.com/compare/google-family-link/ for a detailed comparison.

Routines & blocking

What routines are available?

Homework Mode, Bedtime Mode, Exam Focus, and Weekend Balance. Schedules apply automatically once set, so routines run without daily reminders.

Can I keep learning apps allowed?

Yes. Supervisors can choose allowed apps that remain available during study routines.

Can the supervised user request access?

Yes. The supervised user can request temporary access, and you can approve or deny it from StudyLumen Parent.

Does blocking work without internet?

Yes. Enforcement runs on the supervised device itself, so app blocking and website filtering keep working offline. An internet connection is needed for pairing, rule updates, and access requests.

Why does StudyLumen Child need special Android access?

StudyLumen uses Usage Access to detect the foreground app, a local DNS VPN to filter websites, and notifications for visible supervision status. Notification access is used only to pause media during a block; StudyLumen does not read notification content.

What happens if permissions are disabled?

StudyLumen shows a clear setup status so supervisors know what needs attention on the supervised device.

What happens if the supervised user tries to bypass StudyLumen?

StudyLumen is tamper-aware. If enforcement is disabled, permissions are revoked, or the device time is changed, the supervisor is alerted in StudyLumen Parent.

Privacy & data

Is StudyLumen a monitoring app?

StudyLumen applies supervisor-approved study routines and shares the list of installed apps, setup health, access requests, and tamper alerts with the supervisor. It does not upload raw app-usage history, bulk browsing history, messages, notification content, or call content.

Does StudyLumen read messages or browsing history?

No. StudyLumen does not upload raw app-usage history, bulk browsing history, messages, notification content, or call content.

How does website filtering work?

StudyLumen Child runs a local DNS VPN on the supervised device. Filtering decisions happen on the device, and browsing history is not uploaded.

Does StudyLumen track location or advertising IDs?

No. StudyLumen collects no advertising ID and no precise location.

What can the supervisor see?

The list of apps installed on the supervised device, setup health, access requests, and tamper alerts — the information needed to apply rules and confirm the device is healthy.
