Temporary access is not permissiveness. It is governance: the default stays restrictive for distraction apps during the study window; legitimate needs get a short, visible bridge.

What major Android tools already offer (fair map)

Families on Android often mix Google Family Link, on-device Digital Wellbeing, and third-party supervision. Official Family Link help (retrieved 2026-08-03) documents several “more access” mechanisms — each useful, each different from a named homework exception:

1) Ask for more time / parent unlock

On a locked supervised device, a child can Ask for more time. A parent can approve with the supervising account password on the child’s device, or use a parent access code from the Family Link app or web (Google states this code is not sent by email or SMS).

That is a real approval path. It is still easy for households to treat it as a full unlock rather than a scoped exception (“YouTube for the science video, 20 minutes, then pause list returns”).

2) Bonus time

Parents can grant Bonus time for the day without rewriting the standing daily limit, downtime, or school-time schedule. Bonus time answers: more minutes today. It does not, by itself, record: which paused app, for which assignment, until when.

3) Schedules: Downtime and School time

Family Link supports Downtime and School time schedules (Android 7+), including limited apps during those windows and optional Unlimited apps that remain available. School time can silence many notifications while still allowing calls/texts under documented rules. Google’s School time product framing (2024 announcement; help pages current in 2026) is about a scheduled limited experience — close in spirit to a study window, still not identical to a one-off temporary request mid-homework.

4) Unlimited time apps and approvals

Apps can be blocked, limited, or marked Unlimited time (exempt from the daily limit; can stay available in Downtime/School time). New Play downloads can require approval. “Unlimited” is a standing bucket — great for phone, maps, or a required classroom app; a poor substitute for “allow Instagram for ten minutes to message the group about the brief.”

Android Digital Wellbeing app timers and focus-style tools help a person manage their own habits. A PIN can protect app-limit changes on some devices. That is not the same as a supervisor reviewing a temporary access request for a supervised homework block.

Campus phone rules are spreading — home still needs exceptions

Step 1 — Keep a real study window

Define school nights, start, and default end (or “until the list is done, max N minutes”). Daily screen totals answer a different question than “what is allowed during this assignment?”

Step 3 — Standardize the request

Child (or teen) asks with four fields:

  1. Reason (one sentence, assignment-linked)
  2. Scope (which app or site — not “the whole phone”)
  3. Duration (default 10–20 minutes; hard cap you choose)
  4. Done condition (timer ends or task bit finished — say which wins)

Example:

“Need browser access to the library database for the history citation, 15 minutes, then back to pause list.”

Step 4 — Standardize the response

Parent/supervisor answers with one of:

  • Approve as requested
  • Approve with a tighter scope (“browser only; social stays paused”)
  • Approve with a shorter clock
  • Deny with an alternative (“use the laptop at the table”; “I will look it up with you”)
  • Defer (“after dinner; put it on the list”)

Visible decisions beat silent ones. The point is fairness across siblings and nights — not surveillance theater.

Step 5 — Return to baseline automatically

When the clock ends:

Older students usually need more pre-approved study tools and fewer random unlocks, not zero structure.

Anti-patterns to retire

  1. Parent password shared “just in case” — turns every limit into optional. Prefer a request path you control.
  2. Disabling limits instead of granting a scope — teaches that the system is either off or on.

  4. Different silent rules for different kids with no write-up — feels unfair fast.
