Homework Schedules by Age: One House, Four Routines
Use shared family principles with different schedules and levels of autonomy for ages 5–7, 8–11, 12–14, and 15–17.

If you have more than one child, you already know the awkward truth: the rule that works for your 7-year-old is wrong for your 14-year-old, and the freedom your teenager has earned looks like chaos when your fourth-grader demands the same. Managing screens during homework gets harder as kids get older — in a 2025 Pew Research Center survey of US parents, the share who felt they could do a better job managing their child's screen time rose steadily with the child's age, from 25% of parents with a child under 2 to 47% of parents of 8- to 12-year-olds (US · 2025 · children 12 and younger).
The answer is not a single, stricter household rule. It is age-band homework schedules: the same family principles, enforced differently per child. This guide gives you a framework you can write on paper tonight — no app required — plus an honest look at where software can carry the load.

Why one rule can't fit every age
Three findings from recent large-scale research explain why siblings need different setups:
Devices arrive early, then change job. In Common Sense Media's 2025 US census of children zero to eight, 40% of children had their own tablet by age 2, and nearly 1 in 4 had a personal cellphone by age 8 (US · 2025 · ages 0–8). Young children's device use is mostly consumption — but gaming time in that age group rose 65% over four years, which is often the first "homework vs. fun" collision families meet.
The teen years are a different scale. About half (50.4%) of US teenagers ages 12–17 reported four or more hours of daily screen time in federal health-interview data collected July 2021–December 2023 (US · CDC/NCHS · ages 12–17). Important caveat: that measure excludes screen time for schoolwork — it describes recreational use, not homework.
Most families have rules; fewer have enforcement. 86% of US parents of children 12 and younger say they have screen-time rules, but only 19% say they stick to them all the time (Pew · US · 2025). In the UK, 89% of parents of 8- to 17-year-olds report rules about their child's phone use, while only 35% use parental-control tools (Ofcom · UK · report published 2026). The gap between "we have a rule" and "the rule happens" is where homework routines live or die.
And the school day is increasingly handled for you: as of March 2026, 114 education systems — 58% of countries — have national school phone bans, and in the US 39 states either ban phones statewide (15) or require districts to adopt restriction policies (24) (UNESCO GEM · global · March 2026). That covers class time. It says nothing about 6:30 pm at your kitchen table — and ban prevalence is not proof of learning gains. Home is still your decision.
The framework: same constants, different enforcement
Hold these household constants for every child (they match the American Academy of Pediatrics' family media plan guidance, which recommends making a plan for every family member and revisiting it each school year):
- A screen-free homework zone or window — homework happens without entertainment feeds open, at a set place or time.
- One screen at a time — the phone is not a second screen during homework.
- Notifications off during the study block — alerts are designed to pull attention back.
- Exceptions are named, not sneaked — "I need YouTube for this science clip" is a request, not a loophole.

Staggering schedules in one house
With two or three children, the practical problems are overlap and fairness:
- Stagger start times, not principles. If the 8-year-old works 5:00–5:30 and the 13-year-old 6:00–7:30, each gets a quiet house during their block — and the older child doesn't watch the younger one finish and grab a tablet.
- Fairness ≠ sameness. Say it out loud: "Your sister has a later block because she's older. Yours gets longer as you grow." Children accept different rules far more easily when the reason and the graduation path are explicit.
- One visible family schedule. A paper grid on the fridge — names down the side, blocks across — ends most "but he got to…" debates before they start. The AAP explicitly suggests revisiting the plan at the start of each school year, which is the natural moment to graduate each child to the next band.
- Protect the constants. Bedtime charging spots, homework-zone rules, and notification-free blocks stay identical for everyone; only the length, timing, and autonomy level differ.

Frequently asked questions
Should siblings have identical homework device schedules?
No. Children can share the same family principles while using different start times, window lengths, app lists, and levels of adult involvement. Fairness means the reason for each difference is clear, not that every setting is identical.
What should stay consistent across children?
Keep the core process consistent: a predictable study window, safety and study tools that remain available, a pause list, a legitimate exception path, and a review date. The defaults and degree of autonomy can change with age and demonstrated responsibility.
How can different schedules still feel fair?
Explain the age, workload, and responsibility reasons in advance, stagger blocks when helpful, and define how greater autonomy is earned and reviewed. Avoid changing one child's rule in the middle of another child's argument.
Does each supervised device need its own routine?
If a family uses device-based enforcement, each supervised device needs settings that match the child who uses it. Families can also run the same framework on paper; software is optional and does not replace the family explanation.
